Materials:
Using an invisible cast on method, cast on 84 sts. Knit one row. Join and work in rounds, changing colors at random until piece meas. about 5" less than desired total length (probably about 14-16"). Insert occasional groups of four or five purl sts. for variety if desired. Work crown as follows:
Repeat rounds 3 and 4, having one less stitch between dec's on each subsequent dec round, unti 7 sts rem. (Change to dpn when stitches become too few for circular needle.) Draw thread through rem 7 sts and pull tight.
Fasten off. Turn cap inside out and make sure all ends are tied tightly and trimmed to about 2-3". Turn cap back to right side.
Now work the other end: with circular needle, take up the cast-on sts. Work the crown same as for first side. Run tail of yarn through several stitches and trim off. Tuck one side into the other and turn back cuff. You can reverse the cap as desired.
